KIHEI, Hawaii, August 21, 2009 – U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye helped rededicate the Joint Information Technology Center (JITC) in Maui on Friday. The first of its kind in the Pacific, the JITC is a state-of-the-art research and development hub that supports the Department of Defense by developing and sustaining technology solutions.

The rededication ceremony symbolized the government taking over the facility that has been operated by Akimeka since its inception in 2003. It is now a Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated (GOCO) facility. GOCO partnerships allow each partner to perform duties for which they are best suited: the government establishes mission areas and the contractor helps implement the mission, using best business practices.

Matt Granger , vice president for operations, describes the JITC as a largely "virtual" organization, although it has about 66 people working on it in Maui. Akimeka's primary contracts with the Department of Defense involve military health systems. It specializes in melding the health information systems of the three military services so that they can be accessed from anywhere. Granger estimates that up to 90 percent of the JITC work is still medical, but it is now turning into a research and application development center for a wider variety of tasks.
