Akimeka Hosts an “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” Day, March 4, 2004

Akimeka hosted an “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” Day on March 4, 2004, as part of National Engineers Week sponsored by the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc (MEDB) and the Women in Technology Project. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day was created in 2001 by the National Engineers Week Committee to encourage high school-aged girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math education careers. Statistics indicate that women represent less than 10 percent of all engineers and less than 20 percent of all college engineering students in America.

Three Maui students in grades 9 through 11 from local Kihei Charter High School job shadowed Akimeka women engineers and received a firsthand introduction to engineering and technology. Each girl worked side by side with their mentor and observed the day-to-day operations of an engineer. The girls were able to job shadow two different engineers during the day. At the end of the day, the girls were surprised to find that their observations of engineer duties were very different from their expectations. Overall, all participants agreed that the entire day was a success, and everyone found the experience to be very rewarding.
