Akimeka Receives Hawaii SBA Entrepreneur Success Award, November 30, 1999
The annual State of Hawaii Small Business Administration (SBA) Entrepreneur Success Award is awarded to the state's top entrepreneurs who are outstanding examples of tenacity and skill of the small business community throughout the state. The tough economic times facing Hawaii in the 1990's drives the entrepreneur to show flexibility, creativity and stamina that turns adversity into opportunity.
In May, 2000 Vaughn Vasconcellos, President of Akimeka LLC received the award for Entrepreneurial Success Award for the State of Hawaii for the Year 2000. Criteria for the award included proof of fast growth both financially and number of employees, as well as the innovativeness of products and services
Akimeka is the only entity in Hawaii concentrating on meeting the telemedicine and telehealth needs of the Pacific Rim region. As a Native Hawaiian, Vasconcellos identified a need to improve patient care for Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. Vasconcellos' nomination was based upon his leadership in Akimeka's business performance and management qualities, financial stability and commitment to the Hawaiian community.
Initial services were related to a unique congressionally funded project administered in Hawaii that focuses on researching and developing optimal telecommunication solutions which provide improved delivery of healthcare to underserved patients across the Pacific. Akimeka has since successfully expanded its telemedicine services into the commercial industry where it has successfully developed and installed and support a low bandwidth web-based electronic patient record system.
