Senator Inouye Receives Thayer Award at West Point, April 18, 2002

On April 18, 2002, US Senator Daniel K. Inouye received West Point's most prestigious award, The Thayer Award for 2001. Colonel Sylvanus Thayer established West Point in 1802 and is considered the Father of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Each year, West Point selects an outstanding American who has distinguished himself or herself. Previous recipients include the likes of President Dwight Eisenhower, General Douglas MacArthur, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Mr. Henry Kissinger. The ceremony included a parade by the Corps of Cadets and a dinner hosted in Washington Hall. Senator Inouye's speech to the Corps of Cadets and visitors was truly magnificent and emotional, and reflected on West Point's creed of "Duty, Honor, and Country." Following his speech, Senator Inouye was accorded a standing ovation by the entire Corps of Cadets and guests.

A delegation from Hawai'i attended the ceremony. The delegation included:
  • Ms. Christina Kemmer, Hawai'i Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army
  • Dr. Hamilton McCubbin, President, Kamehameha Schools and his son, Major Todd McCubbin, USAF
  • Colonel (Ret) David Peters, Trustee, Queen Liliu'okalani Trust and his wife, Mele
  • Mr. Vaughn G. A. Vasconcellos, President, Akimeka LLC
  • State Representative Guy Ontai of Mililani
  • Mr. Troy Cooper, Counsel-in-House, Waste Management Corporation
Also present was General Ric Shinseki, Chief of Staff, US Army and his wife, Patti. Both General Shinseki and his wife are from Kaua'i. General Shinseki, Colonel Peters, Mr. Vasconcellos, and Representative Ontai are all graduates of West Point.
Representative Ontai, accompanied by Dr. McCubbin, Colonel Peters and Mr. Vasconcellos read a resolution from the Hawai'i State Legislature to Senator Inouye congratulating the Senator on behalf of the people of Hawai'i.
