Desktop Medical Imaging Device Donated to Hospital
From THE MAUI NEWS, February 7, 2002
WAILUKU - Akimeka LLC, a Native Hawaiian-owned information technology company, has donated a desktop medical imaging device to the Maui Memorial Medical Center through the hospital's foundation.
Vaughn Vasconcellos, president of Akimeka, presented hospital officials with a Lumisys ACR 2000 portable radiology system. The equipment is a filmless radiology system that will be used to provide images for the Maui Memorial emergency room and intensive care units.
"We are deeply appreciative for Akimeka's generosity in providing something that will prove to be so useful, due to its mobility and imaging capabilities," said Jackie Harp, the hospital foundation executive director.
The Lumisys is a desktop radiographic system that both is low in cost and provides a high-resolution image. The image acquisition system was used by Akimeka in a Department of Defense research project in collaboration with Trex Enterprises. The research project was supported by U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye.
Tak Sugimura, formerly a consultant to Akimeka, assisted in the transfer of the equipment. Sugimura is a member of the Maui Memorial Foundation board. The foundation is a nonprofit agency established to assist Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Participating in a ceremony to present the donation were John Schaumburg, Maui Memorial Medical Center interm CEO; Grant Chun, Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation board president; Sara McDonald, imaging supervisor; Vaughn Vasconcellos, president of Akimeka LLC; and Tak Sugimura, foundation board member.
